About The Wine

Wachau Riesling with the Vinea Wachau 'Smaragd' designation — the top tier reserved for Austria's finest wines — typically costs double this price. You're getting that pedigree at $38.99.

The Wachau needs no introduction to serious wine lovers — this narrow, terraced stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ancestral home of world-class Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Nowhere else does the Danube's cooling influence collide so dramatically with steep, sun-baked primary-rock terraces, and nowhere is the region's own strict quality pyramid — Steinfeder, Federspiel, and the top tier, Smaragd — taken more seriously than here.

That pyramid is exactly where Christoph Donabaum has made his name. A small, ambitious family estate farmed hands-on by Christoph and his parents, Donabaum works some of the most demanding, primary-rock vineyard sites in and around Spitz — places where you farm by hand or you don't farm at all. Christoph is a proud member of Vinea Wachau, the growers' collective that safeguards the region's classification system and its reputation for pure, site-true expression.

This bottling comes from Ried Offenberg, a high-elevation Riesling site rising to roughly 370 meters within the famed Spitzer Graben — cool enough to preserve real tension and acid backbone, yet positioned to still coax full physiological ripeness out of the fruit. It's a site Christoph himself describes as one where the Spitzer Graben's character speaks entirely for itself: cool, precise, and built for the long haul.

Grown on the steep, elevated terraces of Ried Offenberg, this Riesling is cool-climate tension with real ripeness underneath — fine tannin structure sits quietly in the background, framing a wine built with genuine aging potential in mind. Expect the classic Offenberg signature: precise, mineral-driven fruit, a taut acid spine, and a long, structured finish that rewards patience in the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A full-bodied yet cool riesling that has notes of lemon peel, snow pea, green apple, peach and meadow herb. Creamy and textured, with a floral and herbal fragrance and fresh acidity throughout. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~94 James Sucking

Medium yellow-green, with silver reflections. Fine yellow tropical fruit, nuances of ripe peaches and passion fruit, subtle blossom honey, some notes of lime underneath. Taut, tightly meshed, white stone fruit, a fresh structure, mineral and citrus notes, an elegant food companion. ~94 Falstaff

THE PRODUCER

Weingut Donabaum

Weingut Christoph Donabaum is one of the true rising stars of Austria's Wachau — a small, ambitious family estate farmed hands-on by Christoph alongside his parents on some of the steepest, most demanding primary-rock terraces in and around Spitz, including the Zornberg, the Point, the 1000-Eimer Berg, Offenberg, and Setzberg. These are sites where machines can't go, so every pass through the vines is done by hand, often multiple times a harvest, to pull only the ripest, healthiest fruit. Working with vines up to and over 60 years old, Christoph crafts elegant, mineral-driven Grüner Veltliner and Riesling across the full Wachau spectrum — from Steinfeder to single-vineyard Smaragd — using low-intervention winemaking in stainless steel and large wood foudre to let the crystalline fruit and cool character of the Spitzer Graben speak for itself. A proud member of Vinea Wachau, the growers' collective that guards the region's strict quality classification, Donabaum has quickly become one of the most closely watched names coming out of this UNESCO World Heritage wine region.
