About The Wine

Franz Prager, the co-founder of the Vinea Wachau, had already earned a reputation for his wines when Toni Bodenstein married into the family. Bodenstein’s passion for biodiversity and old terraces, coupled with brilliant winemaking, places Prager in the highest echelon of Austrian producers.

Toni is a biologist, geologist, and historian. He’s completely passionate about Austrian terroir, and he has dedicated his life to studying the region’s terroir. His expertise and knowledge have managed to elevate Weingut Prager to a world-class and cult-status winery since 1990. Today, this first-class winery is led by Toni’s son, Robert, who has followed the same steps as his father.

The exceptionally steep, southwest-facing site has a cool mesoclimate due to its proximity to the forest, and its soil is a unique “kalksilikatmarmor,” a limestone silicate marble rarely found elsewhere in the Wachau.

With a rich history and favorable climate, the Wachau is known as one of the greatest terroirs in Austria. Although the region is less than 15 miles long, the unique landscape and vineyards make it renowned. Located a short hour’s drive northwest of Vienna the Wachau is famous for the unique steep stone terraced vineyards rising up on the Northside or “left bank” of the Danube River, as it flows West to East.

Federspiel is a designation of ripeness for dry wines, a term used exclusively by members of the Vinea Wachau. Federspiel wines must be unchaptalized and fall between 11.5 and 12.5% ABV. The grapes are hand-harvested, typically in October, and are sent directly to press where they spontaneously ferment in stainless steel tanks.

The 2022 vintage comes from the iconic Ried Steinriegl, a steep, wind-exposed vineyard at 300–400 meters whose rocky calcareous and gneiss soils produce some of the most linear and mineral-driven Rieslings in the Wachau.

In 2022, the cooler microclimate of Steinriegl delivered a Riesling that is razor-focused, saline, and deeply expressive of stone and altitude, showcasing the estate’s signature style at its most refined.

100% Riesling.

It opens with a lifted, cool-climate purity—notes of lime zest, white peach, crushed stone, and a hint of mountain herbs rising from the glass.

On the palate, the wine is vibrant and finely etched, showing a precise line of citrus and orchard fruit supported by the vineyard’s signature chalky, saline minerality. Its medium body carries a refreshing tension, finishing long, clean, and stony, with a subtle echo of green apple and wet granite that speaks clearly of the high-altitude Steinriegl terraces.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is a fresh and elegant Riesling expressing aromas of white lavender, cedro peel, grapefruit and chalk. It’s medium-bodied, sharp in acidity, and linear, with a chalky minerality. So crisp and precise. Sustainable. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling

Light birch green, silver reflections. Fresh white peach fruit, hints of mango and lime, mineral touch, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, fine fruit expression, racy, freshening acidity, salty finish, very drinkable, certain ageing potential. ~ 93 Falstaff

THE PRODUCER

Weingut Prager

Weingut Prager is one of the Wachau’s most respected estates, celebrated for producing some of Austria’s most precision-driven, mineral-etched white wines.

Founded in 1715 and now led by Toni Bodenstein, often called the Wachau’s “terroir archaeologist,” the winery is known for its exacting vineyard work and deep commitment to expressing the distinct character of each site.

Prager focuses exclusively on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, sourcing from steep, stone-terraced vineyards such as Achleiten, Klaus, and Steinriegl, where ancient gneiss and mica-schist soils shape the house’s unmistakably chiseled, crystalline style. Vinification is carried out almost entirely in stainless steel to preserve purity, tension, and terroir clarity, resulting in wines that are linear, focused, and highly ageworthy.
