About the Wine

If you love elegant, red-fruited Pinot Noir — think the lifted spice and silky finesse of village-level Burgundy with a touch more California sunshine — this is one of the benchmarks. And right now, it's having a serious moment. Flowers was just named a 2025 Wine Enthusiast American Winery of the Year finalist — one of only five wineries in the country to make the list.

Walt and Joan Flowers founded the estate in 1989, when almost nobody believed you could grow great Pinot two miles from the Pacific Ocean. Only Hirsch and Bohan were out there. Today, the area has a name — the "extreme Sonoma Coast" — and Flowers is its founding family. Their estate vineyards, Camp Meeting Ridge and Sea View Ridge, sit on wild, windswept ridges between 1,150 and 1,875 feet, just above the marine fog layer. Plantings within the entire Fort Ross-Seaview AVA make up only 2% of its total acreage. This is some of the rarest, hardest-won Pinot terroir in California.

The pedigree runs deep. Wine Enthusiast calls Flowers a "training ground" for some of California's most legendary cool-climate winemakers — Steve Kistler, Ross Cobb, Greg La Follette, and Hugh Chapelle all passed through. Today the estate is owned by the Huneeus family (Quintessa, Faust), with Chantal Forthun leading the winemaking since 2012.

2023 vintage played beautifully into Flowers' hand. A long, cool growing season delivered brilliant acidity, lifted aromatics, and the kind of cool-climate transparency critics across the board called classic Sonoma Coast — 94 points from Jeb Dunnuck, 93 from Decanter, 93 from Suckling, 93 from Wine Enthusiast. Native yeast fermentation, 10 months in mostly neutral French oak (just 20% new), and a light hand throughout. Pinot that tastes like a place, not a recipe.

Tasting Notes

100% Pinot Noir.

Medium ruby in the glass. Lifted aromas of red cherry, cranberry, rose petal, sweet baking spice, and that distinctive Sonoma Coast forest-floor character — think wet redwoods and pine.

The palate is medium-bodied with juicy raspberry, blood orange, and tart plum framed by silky, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acid spine. A cool saline thread carries through to the finish. Drink now through 2031.

Critical Reviews

The 2023 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a medium ruby color and is fresh on the nose with notes of lifted spice, compact red berries, Bing cherries, roses, and sweet herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, with a polished and fine texture, a silky feel, and clean elegance through the finish. It’s a lovely and charming Pinot Noir with a lot of finesse to drink over the coming 8-10 years. ~ 94 Jeb Dunnuck

It's one of the first 2023 Sonoma pinots to be released and a great reflection of the long, cool growing season. Tangy, fresh and well balanced, with intricate orange zest, cinnamon, red cherry and black tea flavors on a vibrant, acid-driven texture. Medium- to full-bodied. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling

Salty fresh ocean spray with cranberry and strawberry scents on the nose. Some forest floor and wet soil accents add the savoury touch but this is lovely and expressive on the nose. Smooth and almost subtle, it’s not super bright, more knitted down and quiet right now - straight with a spiced vein that stays from start to finish. I like the succulence and precision however, there is still great acidity, but this presents more power than poise right now. 3.65pH. The first time this wine will be sold via the Place de Bordeaux. Owner Huneeus Vintners, director Jen Beloz and winemaker Chantal Forthun. ~ 93 Decanter

This aromatic and savory Pinot brings aromas of roasted shiitake, black plum and clove on the nose, while the palate brings spicy energy and flavors of blackberry, plum skin, sweet cinnamon and forest floor across a long, meandering finish." ~ 93 Wine Enthusiast

Fresh and focused, with raspberry and blood orange coulis lined with rooibos tea and savory notes. A subtle mineral thread supports the finish. Offers a textbook Sonoma Coast profile. Drink now through 2029. 34,600 cases made. ~ 92 Wine Spectator

The 2023 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is another terrific wine from Flowers. Bright, aromatic and lifted, it offers up an exotic mélange of crushed red berry fruit, cedar, cinnamon, pipe tobacco and dried herbs. Strong floral and savory inflections lend energy throughout. The 2023 is light on its feet and quite delicate, not to mention long on personality. ~ 92 Vinous Media

The 2023 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast was matured for 10 months in 20% new French oak. Cranberry and blackberry aromas pour from the glass, accented by wafts of saline, aniseed and Earl Grey tea leaves. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with bitters- and citrus-laced flavors. It’s structured by silky tannins and bight acidity and has a long, expressive finish. ~ 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
