Naturally cooler summers in this location allow more time on the vine, and intensity without weight is the result, with wines at 13% alcohol or less. From fruit harvested in October, the bright ruby red 2023 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth offers a gorgeous perfume of incense, sweet tea leaf, rosehip perfume, delicate umami tones, and black raspberries. Medium-bodied, it has refined tannins, vibrant, snappy red cherries, an angular, mineral structure, and a long, floating finish. Both approachable and long, I love it. Drink 2026-2046. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2023 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth is a wine of pure and total seduction. Tiny yields and a cool, drawn-out growing season produced a rich, textured Pinot that embodies the personality of the West Sonoma Coast—namely, its ability to produce Pinots with rich fruit at relatively low sugar levels. Hints of lavender, blue-toned fruit and exotic spice build into a layered, racy Pinot. ~97 Vinous
This shows power in the form of mulberry, blackberry and boysenberry reduction notes that are vibrant and defined thanks to the lip-smacking acidity embedded throughout. An additional bramble element provides a live-wire feel through the long, licorice-accented finish, which immediately brings you back for the next sip. Drink now through 2038. ~96 Wine Spectator
The 2023 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth is layered and spicy on the nose: sweet red cherry and pomegranate mingle with wafts of rooibos tea, red licorice, woodsmoke, saline and bitters. The light-bodied palate reveals complex layers of crunchy, earth-laced fruit and the mossy character reminiscent of a coastal forest. It’s framed by firm, lacy tannins and bright acidity, and its structural tension, combined with how dramatically it unfurls with air, suggests it will be long lived in the cellar. ~94+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

What the Critics Said
THE PRODUCER
Occidental-Kistler
Occidental is the singular Pinot Noir project of Steve Kistler — the winemaker who founded Kistler Vineyards in 1978 and spent nearly forty years building it into one of the most legendary Chardonnay houses in America, twice earning Wine Spectator's "Chardonnay of the Year" award before stepping away in 2017 to devote himself entirely to Pinot Noir. Alongside his daughter Catherine Kistler, now the estate's second-generation winemaker, Steve farms just 65 dry-farmed, own-rooted acres on the wind-scoured coastal ridges above Freestone and Occidental, planted with proprietary massale selections he developed over three decades. Every wine is fermented with native yeasts and native malolactic bacteria, hand-sorted, and made entirely from free-run juice — the same uncompromising discipline that built the Kistler name, now applied to one of the most acclaimed young Pinot Noir estates on the Sonoma Coast.
