About The Wine

Pine Ridge Vineyards sits in the heart of Stags Leap District, founded in 1978 by Gary Andrus and built on 160 estate acres across five of Napa's most distinguished appellations. The winery holds Napa Green certification and has always embraced sustainable practices. In 2023, winemaker Josh Widaman—who previously crafted Wine Spectator's #1 Wine of the Year at Lewis Cellars—took the reins and immediately began upgrading the cave and winery infrastructure.

This Cabernet is drawn from all four Pine Ridge estate vineyards in Stags Leap District, totaling 47 planted acres. The soils range from gravelly loam to volcanic rhyolitic tuff—the kind of geological diversity that gives a wine layers most single-vineyard bottlings can't touch. The Stags Leap Palisades warm the vines during the day while cool breezes from San Pablo Bay create dramatic evening temperature swings, producing Cabernets with rare balance: power and elegance in the same glass.

The 2023 vintage started late and went slow, harvested from October 5th to November 1st. Widaman cold-soaked the must for gentle extraction, then fermented in stainless steel, concrete, and oak barrel fermenters at 88°F with rigorous pump-overs to build deep color and fine tannins. The wine aged 20 months in 75% French oak, with components blended after three months to marry the bright fruit with oak spice nuances. The result is fresh, structured, and built to cellar 10 to 15 years.

Graphite and slate open the wine, moving into lush black cherry, huckleberry, berry compote, fresh fennel, vanilla bean, and cinnamon spice—all carried by bold tannins and a juicy black cherry finish. Somm Journal scored it 98 points and called it "a pure and exquisite expression of the world-famous Stags Leap District." James Suckling gave it 97. This is what four estate vineyards and volcanic terroir deliver when a winemaker who knows how to build structure gets his hands on them.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Shows the balance that defines the appellation: graphite and slate, lush black cherry, huckleberry, berry compote, fresh fennel, vanilla bean, and cinnamon spice, carried by bold tannins and a juicy black cherry finish. ~98 Somm Journal

Energetic and earth-laden, with suede tannins that carry weight. The mouth is lathered with mulberry, sweet earth, spearmint, graphite, and cherrywood-cedar. Its broad shoulders are balanced on a balanced, fresh acidity, with a refined finish of violets and black plum compote. ~97 Tasting Panel Magazine

Scents of cherry and raspberry mark the nose, joined by hints of soft leather or suede. It's full-bodied and ripe but with a bit more acid and tannin than the Napa Valley bottling. Nicely structured, finishing tart and silky, it should drink well for at least a decade. ~92 The Wine Advocate
