About The Wine

Platt Vineyard Estate sits on the Sonoma Coast, where cold Pacific fog and marine winds slow ripening and etch mineral precision into every grape. Lewis E. Platt planted the property in 2003 and 2004, and for nearly two decades the fruit went into other labels. In 2022 the vineyard was acquired, and in 2023 the entire harvest was vinified under Platt Vineyard's own name for the first time. This is the estate's debut vintage.

This Chardonnay brings together all blocks on the property—old Wente selections and Clone 72, planted on those cold hillsides twenty years ago. Winemaker Derek Flegal and consultant Thomas Rivers Brown fermented the wine in barrel on native yeasts and aged it fourteen months in French oak—33% new, 67% used. The result is Sonoma Coast Chardonnay at full throttle: citrus oil, crushed oyster shell, lemon zest, and flinty reduction on the nose; chopped hazelnut, white plum, and Meyer lemon tart as it opens. The oak frames without smothering. The wine is vertical on the palate—tension, structure, bright acidity—ending on a clean, laser-focused, saline finish.

The 2023 vintage was late and cold. Winter rains gave way to a cool, foggy spring that delayed budbreak three to four weeks. Uneven set and diminished yields followed. A cool but sunny summer and fall brought the fruit home, with harvest running from October 4th to October 26th. The long hang time and coastal influence delivered ultra-complex fruit, even this early in the wine's life.

Sonoma Coast Chardonnay for people who want the richness without the makeup. This is the real site, the real vintage, the real deal—987 cases made, first release, your chance to get in early on a property that's been hiding in plain sight for two decades.

Vibrant citrus oil, lemon zest, crushed oyster shells, green apple, and flinty reduction. Chopped hazelnut, white plum, Meyer lemon tart, and fresh coastal herbs emerge as it opens. Full-bodied with bright acidity, tension, and a clean saline finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A dense, layered white, showing pineapple with both dried and candied green apples. Chalk, some oyster undertones and green mangoes as well. Full-bodied and concentrated, this offers phenolic tension and a rich finish, yet also a tangy lime energy. Such a contrast between wild acidity and ripeness. From old Wente clone (chicks with no hens). Drink or hold. ~96 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Platt Vineyard

In the 1980s, Kendall-Jackson rejected the California wine industry's trend toward vineyard-specific wine labeling. Kendall-Jackson ignored the concept of terroir in favor of blending wines from different regions to achieve desired wine characteristics. Kendall-Jackson reversed that direction in the mid-2000s, along with a push to upgrade their quality. The label now continues under the umbrella company, Jackson Family Wines, that Jackson later created. In late 2006, the Jackson family launched White Rocket Wine Co. in Napa Valley to target the millennial generation of wine drinkers.
