About The Wine

Emmerich Knoll (pronounced with a hard “K”) represents three generations of family winemaking rooted in the village of Unterloiben in Austria’s famed Wachau region—an estate shaped alongside the family’s historic 400-year-old Loibnerhof Familie Knoll restaurant in nearby Dürnstein.

Today, Weingut Emmerich Knoll farms 15 hectares of steep, terraced vineyards carved into the Wachau’s dramatic landscape, where Grüner Veltliner and Riesling thrive in thin soils, intense exposures, and meticulously tended parcels. Their cuvées are celebrated for purity, precision, and age-worthy structure—hallmarks of the Knoll family legacy.

As a proud member of “Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus”—an elite association of Wachau winemakers following strict quality standards—Knoll Winery consistently produces wines that earn top spots on Michelin restaurants, including the legendary 3-star Michelin restaurant, The French Laundry.

Ried Kreutles, nestled at the foot of Loibenberg Mountain and close to the Danube, benefits from gentle slopes and calcareous loam soils—conditions ideally suited to Grüner Veltliner and known for producing wines of finesse and clarity.

Hand-harvested with rigorous sorting to eliminate any trace of botrytis, the 2023 Grüner Veltliner from this site is crafted to express the vineyard’s character with purity and mouthwatering vibrancy.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A very distinctive Wachau gruner veltliner with a whole garden of fresh herb aromas, also ample quince and Mirabelle plum fruit that pulls you into the generous, medium-bodied palate. What fantastic balance this has in the long, well-structured, subtly vegetal finish. Drink or hold. ~ 94 James Suckling

Pale yellow green colour. Ripe apples, delicate notes of passion fruit, with a hint of blossom honey in the background, notes of candied lime zest. Juicy, elegant, fine acidity, mineral, a hint of peach, savoury finish, lingers long, a versatile food wine.~ 92 Falstaff

THE PRODUCER

Weingut Emmerich Knoll

Weingut Emmerich Knoll is one of the Wachau’s most iconic family estates, rooted in the village of Unterloiben and shaped by generations of hands-on, terroir-driven winemaking. Now led by the third generation, Emmerich Knoll III, the family farms roughly 15 hectares across some of the region’s most celebrated sites—including Schütt, Loibenberg, Kellerberg, and Pfaffenberg—where steep, terraced vineyards demand meticulous handwork.

Their focus on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling has earned them international acclaim, producing wines prized for their purity, minerality, and remarkable aging potential. Tradition runs deep here: harvesting is done by hand, winemaking favors restraint, and the wines are matured in large, neutral casks to preserve each site’s character. Even the labels, adorned with Saint Urban, honor centuries of winemaking heritage—reflecting a legacy that continues to define Austrian excellence today.
