Take 90 seconds to uncover what makes this estate and this wine truly unforgettable.

The wine-growing tradition of the Dr. Hugo Thanisch family can be traced back more than 350 years. In 1636, the name was mentioned for the first time in the registers of Bernkastell-Kues. The quality of the family’s wines soon extended their excellent reputation far beyond the Mosel valley.

At the end of the 18th Century, the Thanischs acquired the Berncasteler Doctor vineyard, a very steep site with a deep devon slate structure, situated behind and overlooking the rooftops of the quaint old town of Bernkastel. The Doctor's name originates in a legend about Prince Boemond II of Trier who fell sick and then was cured by a wine from this vineyard. The medicinal powers of fine wines are today being rediscovered! Without a doubt, the Doctor Vineyard is the most valuable and famous German site.

The Thanisch estate includes over 30 acres of vineyards located on the best sites of “the best place for Riesling in the world” a.k.a Mosel Valley. Mosel is, in Wine Spectator’s words “one of the most striking wine regions on Earth.”

This wine comes from Badstube, the Bernkasteler Badstube comprises six of the best vineyard sites in Bernkastel. The growing site’s soil features a fine slate that stores water extremely well. Very lively and fresh Rieslings grow here with racy and stable acidity and extraordinary potential for development.

Critical Reviews

What a great Mosel Riesling Spätlese. Sensationally fine stone fruit aromas are wrapped around a slatey core on the concentrated but super-elegant, medium-bodied palate. Then a whole garden of fresh herbal notes comes through in the extremely long and precise finish. Ends surprisingly dry for this category, but that’s exactly right. Drink or hold. ~ 97 James Suckling

The 2023 Riesling Berncasteler Doctor Spätlese appears slowly on the nose, uniting grapefruit peel and white, ripe peach. The palate is tender and exquisite, clad in cloud-like expressions of lemon, stone fruit and blossom. It's elegantly aromatic, poised, vividly fresh and only medium-sweet with a lingering finish. Wwe Dr. H. Thanisch

Mosel, Germany

Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Thanisch) is a historic and renowned wine estate nestled in the heart of the Mosel region of Germany, celebrated for producing world-class Riesling.

The winery, which translates to "Widow Dr. H. Thanisch," traces its roots back over 350 years, with the Thanisch family being instrumental in establishing the prestige of the Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard—one of the world's most famous and highly-valued vineyard sites, which they still predominantly own.

Today, the estate is managed by the 11th generation of the family, focusing on hand-harvested fruit from steep, slate-rich slopes to craft mineral-driven, elegant, and long-lived Rieslings across the full spectrum of styles, from dry to noble sweet.
