About The Wine

Barone di Villagrande isn't just Sicily's oldest winery — it's been farming the eastern slopes of Mount Etna since 1727, nearly three centuries of volcanic terroir in a single family's hands.

At 700 meters above sea level near Milo, they grow Carricante the way Etna has always demanded: organically, patiently, and with the kind of restraint that makes the island's best whites feel impossibly pure.

Carricante is Etna's answer to the great white grapes of the world — mineral-driven, searingly fresh, built on acidity that keeps the wine vibrant for years. Grown at altitude on volcanic soils, it's a grape that tastes like the mountain itself: saline, stony, bright as a cold spring.

The 2024 vintage brought dry, hot conditions through spring and summer, then late-July rain that gave the vines just enough moisture to balance. The result is a wine with: sweet white fruit, sage, thyme, minerality, and salinity on the nose.

The palate explodes with acidity, dried lime skin, and spice, finishing with a hint of heat on the chest and persistent floral aromatics.

Drink it over the next couple of years while it's still crackling with energy.

What the Critics Said

Supple layers of fleshy yellow apple, apricot and honeyed saffron embody the broad, textured palate gently teased by cleansing citrus acidity and lemon oil length. ~ 96 Decanter World Wide Awards

THE PRODUCER

Barone di Villagrande

Barone di Villagrande is one of Etna’s historic wine estates, with the Nicolosi family cultivating vineyards on the volcano’s eastern slopes since 1727. Now in its tenth generation, the family farms vineyards at around 700 meters above sea level, where volcanic soils, elevation, and cooling sea breezes create distinctive, elegant wines.

The estate also played an important role in Etna’s winemaking history: in 1869, Paolo Nicolosi built the family cellar and pioneered separate vinification of white and red grapes, laying the foundation for what would become its renowned Etna Bianco Superiore. Today, Marco Nicolosi continues that legacy, combining centuries of knowledge with a deep commitment to expressing the unique character of Etna.
