About The Wine

The Catena family has been making wine in Mendoza since 1902, and they're the reason the world takes Argentine Cabernet seriously. Nicolas Catena pioneered high-altitude viticulture in the 1990s, planting vineyards at nearly 5,000 feet and proving that elevation unlocks concentration and structure that flat-land fruit can't touch. Today his daughter Laura — a Stanford-trained physician and scientist — runs the bodega, applying the same rigor her father brought to those first experimental blocks.

This 2024 Cabernet Sauvignon pulls fruit from two of the estate's sustainably farmed sites in Mendoza, where the Andes create dramatic diurnal swings — hot days build ripeness, cold nights lock in acidity. The result is a wine with the depth and balance you'd expect from bottles twice the price. Mendoza Cabernet at this level offers the kind of structure Napa drinkers recognize immediately, without the Napa invoice.

In the glass: deep purple, with aromas of ripe raspberries, cassis, black cherry, and a savory thread of bell pepper and bay leaf. Full-bodied, with silky tannins that give the wine shape and a long, spice-driven finish. One critic scored it 92 points and called it "juicy and smooth with fine tannins and fruit-driven flavors." The wine delivers now and will hold beautifully over the next several years.

This is the Cabernet to reach for when you want serious wine without the theater — just clean fruit, honest structure, and a family that's been proving itself for more than a century.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Cassis and cranberries with hints of tar and flowers on the nose. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with a juicy, delicate profile. Firm yet fresh, marked by a long, persistent finish. Sourced from both Agrelo and the Uco Valley. ~93 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Catena

Laura Catena was born in Mendoza, Argentina in 1967. She graduated magna cum laude in Biology from Harvard University in 1988. She has a Medical Doctor degree from Stanford University. She is managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata and Luca Winery in Mendoza, Argentina. She is a practicing Pediatric Medicine physician at University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Nicolas Catena Zapata has been widely credited for elevating the status of Argentine Malbec and the Mendoza region through serious experimentation into the effects of high altitude. In 1994, he was the first to plant a Malbec vineyard at almost 1,500 m (5,000 ft) elevation in the Gualtallary sub-district of Tupungato, the Adrianna Vineyard. He developed a clonal selection of Argentine Malbec. The Catena family has been making wine in the acclaimed Mendoza region since 1902.
