About The Wine

Chateau de Beaucastel traces to 1549, when Pierre de Beaucastel acquired the land at Coudoulet. Pierre Tramier bought the estate in 1909, and five generations of the Perrin family have run it since. This is the house that still plants and bottles all thirteen permitted varieties in its red Chateauneuf, farms organically, and in 2006 was brought into Primum Familiae Vini, the alliance of the world's oldest family wine estates.

The white is the quieter half of that reputation, and for my money the more interesting one. Beaucastel builds it on Roussanne: eighty percent here, with Bourboulenc, Picardan and Clairette filling in around it. Roussanne is a demanding grape in the Southern Rhone. It yields little, oxidizes easily, and punishes a late picking date. Beaucastel leaned into it anyway, far enough to bottle a separate Roussanne off a parcel planted in 1909. This bottle is that commitment at estate scale.

2024 handed them the acidity the style needs. James Suckling has it medium- to full-bodied with an oily mid-palate and a peachy, caressing finish. Vinous found honeysuckle, herbal tea and pear over a neat drive of acidity, closing on mineral and wet stone. Two critics, two vocabularies, one point: weight and lift at the same time, which is the hard part with white Chateauneuf.

80% Roussanne with Bourboulenc, Picardan and Clairette. Lemon and white peach lead the nose, with honeysuckle, herbal tea, warm herbs and mild spice behind them, and a little cedar for nuance. Medium- to full-bodied, with an oily texture through a flavorful mid-palate: baked lemon, a lift of verbena, a slice of pear. Plenty of weight, but a neat drive of acidity carries it straight through, and the finish turns mineral and wet stone with a caressing, peachy edge. Drink or hold.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

So beautifully generous on the palate, so rich but so fresh, with great salinity – really mouthwatering. That's what makes this vintage so special: generosity and freshness plus acidity and salinity makes for great vibrancy and impact. Hugely impressive. ~97 Decanter

A fresh, balanced and velvety white with lemons, white peaches, warm herbs and mild spices on the nose. It's medium- to full-bodied with an oily texture to the flavorful mid-palate. Baked lemons meet a lift of verbena and spices. Plenty of weight here, with a delicious, caressing texture to the peachy finish. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

Mixing 80% Roussanne with Bourboulenc, Picardan and Clairette, the medium- to full-bodied 2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc shines with remarkable complexity as fresh honeysuckle, herbal tea and a slice of pear come forward. Gentle cedar adds more nuance. Sapid and concentrated, the 2024 carries a neat drive of acidity all the way through to the subtle finish of mineral and wet stone. ~93 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Chateau de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel is primarily noted for its Châteauneuf du Pape wines produced in a long-lived style. For its red Châteauneuf du Pape, Beaucastel includes all 13 grape varieties traditionally part of the blend and uses a higher-than-usual proportion of Mourvèdre. The special Vieilles Vignes cuvée of Beaucastel's white Châteauneuf du Pape is a varietal Roussanne wine, which is rare in Rhône and rarer in Châteauneuf du Pape. Beaucastel vinifies wine components in large, old barrels (foudres), with only Syrah grapes exposed to some new oak. The different grape varieties are vinified separately and later blended. Château de Beaucastel is noted for using all the 13 allowed varieties. Estate founded in 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel acquired land in Coudoulet. Purchased by Pierre Tramier in 1909 after phylloxera and transferred to his son-in-law Pierre Perrin.
