About The Wine

Giacosa Fratelli has been farming Piedmont since 1895, when sharecropper Giuseppe Giacosa won the Italian lottery and bought the family's Neive winery. Five generations later, his descendants Maurizio, Paolo, Alessandro, and Mauro farm 50 hectares across the region's best communes — Barolo, Barbaresco, and here in Roero, where sandy soils on the northern bank of the Tanaro River produce some of the cleanest, most expressive Arneis in Italy.

Arneis is Piedmont's answer to the question nobody asked: what if a white wine had the structure of a serious red without the weight? The grape nearly disappeared in the 1970s — considered too difficult, too low-yielding — until a handful of families like the Giacosas kept it alive. Now it's having a moment, and for good reason. In the right hands, it delivers the kind of texture and depth that makes Vermentino feel thin.

This 2025 is organically farmed on soft, sandy Roero soils, hand-harvested, gently pressed, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve the aromatics. Ten to twelve months in glass-lined cement vats gives it time to settle without picking up oak. The result: straw-yellow in the glass, flowers and white peach and mint on the nose, dry and full-bodied on the palate with a velvety texture that punches well above $22.

This is the kind of white that makes you rethink what "everyday drinking" means. Serve it cold — 45°F — with shellfish, crudo, or anything involving lemon and good olive oil. It's built to drink young, when the aromatics are at their peak. For the price of a forgettable Pinot Grigio, you're getting fifth-generation Piedmont and a grape with actual personality. Buy the twelve.

THE PRODUCER

Giuseppe Giacosa

Founded in 1895 in Neive, the heart of Piedmont's Langhe region, Giuseppe Giacosa is the winery that laid the foundation for what is now Giacosa Fratelli, a family-owned estate spanning five generations.

Today, the winery farms vineyards across Barolo, Barbaresco, and Alba, producing classic Piedmont wines that balance tradition with modern sustainability while showcasing the character of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Arneis.
