About The Wine

Sancerre is a category most American buyers already know — crisp, citrusy, restaurant-list white. What people don't always know is that there's a real quality range inside the appellation, and old-vine bottlings sit near the top.

Patient Cottat is a heritage label owned by the Fournier family, who have been making wine in the small Sancerre village of Verdigny for several generations. The estate started with 13 acres in 1950 and has grown to roughly 75 acres today across Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, and Menetou-Salon — small enough to stay hands-on, large enough to source carefully.

The Patient Cottat range honors a 19th-century Master Goldsmith from Paris who fell in love with the central Loire's Berry region, and the Fourniers built the label to showcase what older vines and lower yields can do for Sauvignon Blanc.

The "Vieilles Vignes" designation here means something specific: the grapes come from vines aged roughly 30 to 45 years old. Older vines produce smaller crops, but the fruit is more concentrated and the wine carries more depth, body, and texture than a standard Sancerre. After hand-tended harvest, the wine is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel to keep the fruit pure and the minerality clean — no oak influence, just the grape and the terroir.

What sets this style apart for a US drinker: if your reference point is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this will read fuller, less tropical, and more textured — closer to a good white Burgundy in body, but with Sauvignon's bright nervy backbone.

It's the kind of Sancerre that actually works with food beyond the apéritif slot — richer seafood, soft cheeses, even roasted poultry. Honest, generous, and built to drink, not collect.

100% Sauvignon Blanc.

Lemon-yellow in the glass with golden-green reflections. The nose is complex and intense — opening with acacia blossoms and a distinctly Muscat-like aromatic lift of passion fruit, layered with citrus zest and ripe orchard fruit.

The palate is full and fat by Sancerre standards, with notable concentration from the old vines — green apple, lychee, and a fine line of honey on the back end.

Well-balanced acidity keeps the richness in check, and the finish is long, fruity, and clean.
