About the Wine

Rue du Sorbier is named after the road where the Levasseur family estate sits, and it comes from the domaine’s oldest vineyards, planted in 1973. Located in the Vallée de la Marne, this Champagne is made primarily from Pinot Meunier, with small amounts of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blended in. It’s a true reflection of the region’s character—rich, expressive, and full of depth.

The vineyards are located in the Vallée de la Marne, primarily in Cuchery, with additional plots in Fleury-la-Rivière and Châtillon-sur-Marne. Spread across 4.2 hectares and divided into 18 distinct plots, these vines grow in clay-limestone soils, which contribute to the wine’s structure and minerality. The cool climate of the Marne Valley helps preserve acidity and freshness, ensuring balance and vibrancy in the final cuvée.

David Levasseur took over the family vineyards in 2003 and has been pushing boundaries ever since. He was the first producer in Champagne to earn three sustainability certifications—HVE, Terra Vitis, and Viticulture Durable—before starting the transition to organic farming in 2020. His hands-on approach in both the vineyard and winery results in Champagnes that balance tradition with innovation.

This cuvée spends 36 months on the lees, with 75% base wine and 25% reserve wine blended in. Vinified in stainless steel with full malolactic fermentation, it’s crafted in a bone-dry, no-dosage style that highlights purity and precision.

Aging: 36 months on lees.

Tasting Notes

80% Pinot Meunier, 15% Pinot Noir, 5% Chardonnay. This Champagne dazzles in the glass with an antique gold hue. Aromas of gingerbread, honey, fig, and candied citrus rise from the glass, with a distinct hint of toffee. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and rich, thanks to extended aging on the lees. The finish is long, dry, and citrus-driven, with bright lemony acidity.

For a perfect pairing, pop this bottle with sushi or ceviche, or enjoy it like David Levasseur does—with a fresh orange salad.

Critic Review

~92 Jamie Goode, Wine Journalist

The NV Brut Nature Rue du Sorbier is from the 1978-planted parcel of Les Gautelleries parcel in Cuchery and a blend of 80% Pinot Meunier, 15% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay. A shy nose does not give away much apart from tender apple and slight breadiness. The slender palate, however, convinces with fine mousse on a slight but delicately flavored body. The ripe yellow apple is gentle, as is that hint of peppery rye bread. Zero dosage. ~91 Vinous Media

Medium yellow-green, silver reflections, fine, persistent mousse. White apple fruit with a delicate herbal undertone, a hint of quince, and a nutty touch. Fresh red apple, a fresh acidity, mineral and stimulating, with a hint of lemon on the finish. ~91 Falstaff
