About The Wine

Cinzano isn't a brand—it's a lineage. The first company was registered in 1568. In 1707, Giovanni Battista Cinzano was granted permission to distil and sell liquors in Turin. Fifty years later, in 1757, his sons Giovanni Giacomo and Carlo Stefano opened their herbal shop on Via Garibaldi and invented Vermouth Rosso—a secret blend of 35 herbs from the Alps. By 1786, the Savoy king named them the best producers of Vermouth Rosso in the realm. This bottle commemorates that founding year.

Piedmont is the birthplace of vermouth. The region's proximity to Alpine botanicals—wormwood, gentian, mountain herbs—made Turin the capital of aromatized wine. Cinzano pioneered the category, and this 1757 expression is a small-batch homage to the original recipe: handcrafted, gently infused, built on Italian wines and the same tradition that made the house legendary nearly three centuries ago.

The glass pours deep plum, almost mahogany, with amber highlights. The nose unfolds slowly—spiced wood, roots, vanilla, dried fig, floral wormwood. On the palate, dried fig and baking spice converge with licorice root and bark, smoothed by vanilla, finishing long and bittersweet with the signature Piedmont wormwood bite and a trace of amber resin. Velvety, rich, bitter in the best sense.

This is the vermouth for someone who knows what vermouth was before it became an afterthought. Serve it neat over ice with an orange twist, or let it anchor a Negroni or Manhattan that tastes like it was mixed in 1920. Six bottles, $42.99. The kind of price that makes you wonder why you've been drinking anything else.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This deep plum-hued vermouth features an oxidized scent that suggests raisins and dried figs. Rich and fruit-forward on the palate, the dried fruit flavor gives over to a relatively dry finish with bitter hints of grapefruit peel, gentian and dried herbs. ~92 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Cinzano 1757 Vermouth di Torino Rosso

Cinzano is an Italian brand of vermouth created by two brothers, Giovanni Giacomo and Carlo Stefano Cinzano, in a Turin herbal shop. At the time of its 1992 sale, Cinzano's share of the vermouth market in Europe was in the low single digits, placing it a distant second to Martini. Davide Campari-Milano N.V., trading as Campari Group, is an Italian company active since 1860 in the branded beverage industry. Founded in Milan by Gaspare Campari and currently headquartered in Sesto San Giovanni. The Group is the sixth-largest spirits group worldwide. Campari markets and distributes its products in over 190 countries. Production is concentrated in 22 manufacturing plants. The first Cinzano company was registered in Pecetto Torinese, a Turin suburb, in 1568. In 1707 Giovanni Battista Cinzano was granted permission to distill and sell rosolio and other liquors in Turin.
