About The Wine

Most people try one amaro, decide it's "that bitter stuff," and quit. I get it — they just quit too early.

This box is the fix: the full lineup from one Calabrian house, built to walk you from your first cautious sip to the bottle you hide from guests.

Vecchio Magazzino Doganale sits in the hills of Montalto Uffugo, in Calabria, and its origin story reads like a tall tale. A ship out of Panama wrecks off the coast in 1871. Four men wash ashore — a captain named Jefferson, a cabin boy named Roger, the ship's doctor Gil, and one Egidio Trombino — and they end up working for a local spice-and-spirits man named Giocondo.

Generations later, Ivano Trombino rebuilt the recipes from his grandfather's diaries.

The house still grows and hand-picks its own Calabrian citrus, roots and herbs, infuses each botanical separately, and adds no artificial color.

Six bottles, five expressions — here's what's in the box and what each one is made of.

Jefferson Amaro Importante (×2) — 30% ABV. Bergamot, sweet and bitter orange, lemon, rosemary, oregano, eucalyptus and other bittering herbs. Amber and Mediterranean — citrus and herbs over a soft, balanced, gently bitter finish. The house flagship. Chilled, or in a Boulevardier or Americano in place of vermouth.

Giocondo Caffè Cabaret (×1) — 23% ABV. Ethiopian coffee beans, toasted acorns, vanilla, bitter orange, aloe, china and quassia. A coffee amaro: roasted coffee and cocoa up front, a gentle bitter backbone. After dinner, or with a chocolate dessert.

Washington Amaro di Arance ed Erbe Amaricanti (×1) — 28% ABV. Built on Washington oranges, with sweet and bitter orange, lemon, grapefruit, inula root, chiretta and coriander. Dark and orange-forward, with garden-herb lift and a citrus-zest finish.

Meraviglioso Spirito Amaro (×1) — 25% ABV. Gentian and rhubarb roots, Calabrian citrus, olive leaf, herbs and spices. Amber, velvety, balsamic — the newer "Trombino & Sons"-signed bottling. Neat after dinner, or mixed with tequila or mezcal.

Roger Bitter Amaro Extra Strong (×1) — 25% ABV. Calabrian citrus (bitter orange, bergamot, IGP lemon) with gentian, china, rhubarb, quassia, coriander and carlina. Unfiltered, dark, cloudy and uncompromisingly bitter — the label literally reads "keep under the counter." The serious end of the box.
