About the Wine

“Barolo is more than one of the world's great wines and a partner to one of Italy's most varied and refined cuisines. It's an evocative landscape of gently rolling hills covered by a quilt of vineyards and topped by medieval villages with winding cobblestone streets and views to the Alps.” ~ Wine Spectator.

Dating back to the 17th century, the Scrimaglio (Escrimeaux) family's journey began when they sought refuge in Piedmont, leaving behind their French origins. It was in 1920, Pietro Scrimaglio laid the foundation for a winemaking legacy that would span generations. Building on his father's work, he set the stage for future success.

Scrimaglio embodies "Character, clarity, and precision" in their approach to Piedmontese grape varieties. Their wines beautifully blend tradition and innovation, paying homage to their homeland.

In the 1980s, the family played a pivotal role in revitalizing Barbera d'Asti, and restoring its prominence. This legacy lives on, as their devotion to the "Nizza" subzone earned it the "Nizza Docg" designation.

Scrimaglio follows a purely traditional style complemented by modern winemaking techniques, all in the service of highlighting the unique qualities of each wine without overdoing it.

Vite Colte Winery is one of the biggest cooperatives in Piedmont and a global standout. Originally called "Terre da Vino," it was revamped to "Vite Colte" in 2016 to make a splash in the wine world. With 180 skilled growers and 300 hectares of vineyards, it's a force in Barolo and beyond.

What sets them apart? Terrific terroir, savvy members, and cutting-edge science mean they produce top-quality wines. Their facility is a blend of tech and art, a must-see for wine and culture lovers. Vite Colte crafts Piedmontese classics like Barbera d'Asti, Barbera d'Alba, Nizza, Roero, Moscato d'Asti, Barolo, and Barbaresco, often named after Cesare Pavese's works. Scrimaglio is Vite Colte's boutique winery where they only pick the very best of the vineyards.

The 2019 Scrimaglio Barolo is patiently aged in bottles, exceeding regulatory standards. This careful process ensures they reach the market in their fullest expression, a testament to Scrimaglio's meticulous attention to the essential ingredient of wine: Time.

2019 was an extraordinary vintage in Barolo. Wine Advocate blessed this year with a 96-point review, and Vinous Media said, "The 2019s are potent, tightly wound Barolos that will thrill readers who appreciate the nuance, subtlety, and structure of Nebbiolo. Today, the 2019s show elements of youthful austerity that at times recall vintages such as 2016, 2005, and 1999."

Aging: Minimum 2 years in large oak barrels

Tasting Notes

100% Nebbiolo.

The wine's color journey from ruby red to deep garnet sets the stage, while the complex bouquet of spices, licorice, coffee, and dried roses creates an inviting aroma. The palate offers a balanced, full-bodied experience with smooth tannins, highlighted by flavors of plum and a subtle hint of jam. This wine strikes a perfect balance, combining elegance with depth, making every sip enjoyable and memorable.

Critic Reviews

Fragrant and harmonious, offering well-defined aromas of sour red cherry, cedar, and Campari. Fleshy and concentrated on the palate, with generous silky tannins framing a lifted red fruit profile. ~94 IWSC

~92 Luca Maroni, Yearbook of "The Best Italian Wines" Luca Maroni

Solid Barolo. Thyme, pickled cherry, and sandalwood. The tannins have a firm scape of savory dryness across the mid-palate. Drink or hold. ~90 James Suckling
