About the Wine
San Polo's Vignavecchia vineyard is located on a western-facing hill of rare beauty. These soils are composed of deep deposits of “galestro” (clay/limestone) which support the profound roots systems of 30+ years-old vines. Here, biodiversity reigns supreme. With the utmost respect for nature’s own rhythms, the Estate creates one of Montalcino's most Iconic Brunellos.
2015 is one of the best vintages in the last twenty years. The entire growing cycle of the vine took place under the best possible conditions. A cold winter with frequent heavy rainfall and low temperatures gave way to a dry spring with temperatures slightly above average, enabling uniform bud burst and perfect flowering. The 2015 harvest, which ended by the end of September, delivered perfectly healthy grapes with very thick skin, a prerequisite for long macerations and for wines with great aging potential.
2015 Vintage Report from James Suckling:
"The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins, and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. And as noted before, good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines."
Aging: 36 months in Slavonian oak casks, 6 months in bottle
Tasting Notes:
Intense ruby red color. Dark fruits of black cherry, blackberry, plum and, sweet spices. Elegantly structured with fresh acidity and elegant, smooth, tannins
Reviews
This is a phenomenal new red from San Polo with superb depth and intensity with plum, wet earth and black truffle. Full body. Chewy and ripe tannins and a long and flavorful finish. The depth and beautiful is gorgeous. Needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2022.
