About the Wine
Clos Du Val, French for “small vineyard estate of a small valley,” was founded in 1972 in the renowned Stags Leap District. The winery was first recognized for its Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon at the famed Judgment of Paris in 1976, establishing its place as one of Napa Valley’s most iconic winery estates. The Cabernet from this estate upset the French Bordeaux competitors at the French Culinary Institute Tasting of 1986. Still family-owned today, Clos Du Val farms 350 acres of estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District, Carneros, and Yountville appellations and continues to craft wines of balance and complexity, showcasing the fruit from the outstanding terroir on which our estate lies.
The 2016 vintage was a fruitful one and an abundant harvest full of high-quality & near-perfect fruit! Wine Spectator & Wine Advocate gave the vintage a 98 point rating. Many of the 2016 Napa Cabernets have long been sold due to high demand. Here is an opportunity to acquire one of the last late releases from an important winery that has been improving year after year in the last five years.
The 2016 growing season started two to three weeks early and progressed perfectly through the ripening process. The lack of rain during flowering resulted in a plentiful crop and instead of having very warm temperatures over the summer, we had cooling patterns throughout the season that lengthened harvest. The longer growing season yielded high-quality grapes with the last blocks arriving at the winery on October 14th which happened to be the first day we saw rain for the season.
Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of nutmeg and vanilla bean. The wine showcases complex fruit flavors of black cherry, plum, blueberry, and a hint of caramel apple. The rich and balanced mouthfeel finishes with a mocha flavor and velvety tannins.
Some meaty aromas across ripe blackcurrants, blueberries, and gently tarry notes. The palate has a strong core of smoothly grippy tannins and abundant blackcurrants. Give this another year or two. Try from 2020. ~92 James Suckling
Starting out with the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot), it's a rocking Cabernet that should be snatched up by readers looking for a terrific value in Napa Cabernet at the 50 dollar price point. Blue fruits, sappy herbs, some damp earth, and a touch of mint all emerge from this charming, medium to full-bodied, fruit-loaded effort that delivers the goods. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has turned out beautifully. Fresh, vibrant, and full of energy, the 2016 shows the contemporary Clos du Val style at its best. Inky blue/purplish berry fruit, lavender, spice new leather, and menthol add shades of nuance to this super-attractive, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon from Clos du Val. Once again, Clos du Val's Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is one of the very finest wines readers will find in this price range. ~91 Antonio Galloni
This is blended with 14% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, the whole given 20 months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak. It shows bright floral aromatics and bold flavors of blueberry, cinnamon, and clove. The texture is soft and well-integrated, with a light finish. ~90 Wine Enthusiast
