The Montalcino area is famous for the quality of its wine. The vineyards around the village of Montalcino have always produced red wine, from which the well-known Brunello is born, obtainable only in this world zone. These are some of the most important wines of Montalcino, Livio was even one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino. Don't miss this top wine from a top vintage in Tuscany, it is delicious now and will only improve over the next decade.
The wines of Livio and Lorenzo Sassetti, of the Pertimali Company, are considered among the largest in Montalcino. The excellence in the productions of Brunello and Rosso is the result of the absolute dedication of the Sassetti family, for its land and its fruits and the good location of its vineyards, on Montosoli hill, north of Montalcino with south-east exposure, area particularly suitable for the production of wines with extreme complexity and elegance, thanks to a terroir whose pedological characteristics allow the perfect balance between the wealth and the power typical of the southern area of Montalcino and the finesse of the north.
Livio Sassetti was a founding member of Brunello's consortium. They're a group of the region's best producers committed to making the best quality wine and to continue raising the standards for one of Italy's most well-established regions.
For centuries the Sassetti family has farmed some of Montalcino's most prized and coveted vineyards. Their most prized vineyard is 'Montosoli' which has been labeled as Montalcino's original 'Grand Cru.' This impressive hillside vineyard was 1st recognized in the 1970s and became the 1st 'Cru' bottling in Brunello. The Sassetti's are part of the lucky few who have vineyard holdings on this fantastic terroir. It's no wonder why their wines are annually ranked as some of Brunello's best.
Although the 2017 vintage was difficult in this region, Sassetti is one of the only producers that made magic and achieved a wonderful vintage, and in order to uphold their standards of quality, production was down by a whopping 50%. Wine Critic's said this wine "shows important workmanship in the difficult vintage."

The Sassetti Livio Pertimali 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is quite bright and lifted with cherries and fresh fruits that pop from the glass. The primary intensity is radiant in this wine, setting it apart from many of its peers. It covers the palate with mid-weight intensity, nice acidity, and silky tannins. The brightness you get here is so attractive now, so I see little reason to wait much longer before pulling this cork. This is a 38,000-bottle release. ~93 Robert Parker
The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino makes itself known with a burst of dusty black raspberries, mentholated herbs, crushed ashen stone, and dark flowery undergrowth. Silky-smooth and round in feel, it impresses with a cooling wave of mint-infused wild berry fruits mixed with balsamic spices and wood-smoked salts. While 2017 doesn't have the weight and density you'd expect from such a young Pertimali, it makes up for it with grace and purity, leaving a light coating of tannins and minerals to mingle throughout the finale. In order to uphold their standards of quality, production was down by a whopping 50%. ~93 Vinous Media
Floral aromas of violet mingle with underbrush, plum, and a whiff of new leather. Full-bodied and enveloping, the concentrated palate offers fleshy black cherry, orange zest, and ground clove before a licorice close. It's already rather accessible, with velvety if slightly drying tannins. Drink 2023–2029. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
An opulent style, this red exhibits cherry, berry, tobacco and oak spice flavors. Though fluid, this is firm, with a dense matrix of dusty tannins flexing on the earthy finish. Best from 2024 through 2039. 3,166 cases made, 1,250 cases imported. ~90 Wine Spectator
