About the Wine

McLaren Vale is the birthplace of wine in Southern Australia. Traditional European grapes love the Mediterranean climate, and the region has a trio of high-performing reds: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache. If you’re not familiar with the Grenache coming out of the McLaren Vale, it’s time to get acquainted. It’s McLaren Vale’s rising star grape with more and more passionate producers turning to it to craft serious, single-variety wines.

One of the winemakers embracing Southern Australian Grenache is legendary Aussie winemaker Steve Grimley. At his Five O-Clock Somewhere Wines, he leads a group of passionate, young winemakers and wine-lovers who craft collections of wine that are inspired, inventive and engaging.

Under the Five O-Clock Somewhere umbrella, Grimley’s own exclusive collection is Ees & See. Under this label, he creates what he calls “wines that are interesting, purposeful and honest in a dare-to-be-great environment.” His Grenache, sourced from old vines, is the ideal wine to acquaint you with this rising star in McLaren Vale.

Ees & See No. 5 Grenache is a small production, and we have just a small allotment of this fantastic Aussie Grenache. We’re thrilled to give you the chance to get this fresh, fruity, earthy wine into your hands—we’re one of the only ones offering it—at a price that's over 30% off.

2018 was a great vintage in McLaren Vale, solid rain in winter provided a great foundation with excellent canopy growth resulting from the refreshed soils. Spring was Spring, lovely and mild until November when things started warming up and they didn't really abate until March when the cool nights kicked in providing ideal ripening and harvesting conditions.

Aging: 14 months in used French oak

Tasting Notes: Alluring aromatics of earthy, dark chocolate, there's a tension to the palate that you often see in older vines, nothing overblown, medium-bodied but generous, savory yet layered with sweet fruit. Classic McLaren Vale Old Vine Grenache that will benefit from a few hours in a decanter prior to a nice rich meal. Good now buy great un another couple of years!
