About the Wine
Los Vascos is owned by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild, the owners of none other than the world-famous Château Lafite Rothschild. Lafite is a Bordeaux First Growth classified Château, and one of the most iconic, sought-after, and loved wines of all savvy wine drinkers.
Nestled in the heart of Chile's Colchagua Valley, Viña Los Vascos benefits from an ideal microclimate, positioned between the Andes and the Coastal Mountain Range. This unique location, just 200 km south of Santiago, provides the perfect conditions for viticulture. With hot, dry days and cool, wet nights, the dramatic temperature contrasts favor the slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, resulting in wines of remarkable elegance and depth.
The estate spans 8,800 acres, with 1,500 acres dedicated to vine cultivation. The terroir of Viña Los Vascos is diverse, featuring volcanic soils that contribute to the complexity and longevity of the wines. Here, ancient traditions harmoniously blend with modern expertise, yielding wines that are both unique and reflective of their rich heritage.
At Viña Los Vascos, the philosophy extends beyond viticulture. The estate is a vibrant ecosystem where biodiversity thrives. From olive groves producing exquisite olive oil to orchards, gardens, and even beehives, the integration of agriculture and nature is seamless. Sheep graze the pastures, providing natural fertilizer, while horses are traditionally bred and used for property surveillance.
This commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of the vineyard's operations. The estate is certified by the Code of Sustainability of Wines of Chile and proudly composts all plant waste. Innovative water management systems, including the use of earthworm-powered filtration, ensure that the vineyard operates in harmony with its environment.
Derived from the Greek word for colour, Cromas at Los Vascos signifies nature’s language. Every hue and shade tells a story, guiding their vineyard practices.
In the foothills, they found ochre granite perfect for new vineyards. These soils and sun exposure foster well-balanced vines, producing precise and elegant wines. Cromas wines, aged 12 months in barrels, reflect their expertise and the terroir’s potential.
Tasting Notes
100% Cabernet Franc.
Attractive ruby-red color. Fragrant nose of red berries (raspberry and fresh strawberry), with the herbaceous and floral aromas characteristic of this varietal. Notes of orange peel and graphite complete the aromatic complexity. On the palate, the wine offers a soft opening, marked by intense, refreshing acidity. Strong but pleasant tannins lead to a persistent finish.
Critical Reviews
The Cabernet Franc grapes grown by Los Vascos in Peralillo were planted in 2013 on the property's granite slopes. From these, they selected the fruit for approximately 36,000 bottles of a highly varietal wine, with notes of tobacco, herbs, and ripe red fruits. The palate is tense and juicy, rich in acidity and also with those incisive tannins that are almost a trademark of the Franc. This is an excellent varietal example, as well as a delicious wine for grilled offal. ~93 Descorchados
Ripe but fresh aromas of currants, quince, stones, paprika and dusty spices on the nose. Medium body on the palate with fine-grained tannins and a firm and linear finish. Expressive and juicy. Drink now or hold. ~92 James Suckling
Offers a lot to admire on the nose, with gravel, chicory, licorice and chili pepper details, while the palate is rather compact but offers good richness. Delivers dark chocolate–laced raspberry flavors at the core and firm, mineral-tinged tannins, but also sneaky length. Time in the cellar should help this unwind. Best from 2025 through 2035. 2,750 cases made, 400 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator
A nose of earthy aromas introduces a palate of concentrated black fruit flavors. A smart use of oak barrels resulted in this wine showcasing ripe plum and herbal notes backed by enough acidity and supporting tannins to make it enjoyable through the finish. ~90 Wine Enthusiast
