About The Wine

Most Merlot is designed to be smooth, easy, and forgettable. This one comes from the edge of the growing world.

The Otronia 45 Rugientes is produced in Sarmiento, Chubut, at 45°33' south latitude — the southernmost winery in Argentina, in a cold Patagonian desert nearly 1,900 kilometers from Mendoza. The name says it all: "45 Rugientes" is Spanish for the Roaring Forties, a reference to the relentless winds that define this latitude and the extreme conditions that shape these wines.

The project was built from nothing. In 2010, owner Alejandro Bulgueroni and world-renowned Italian consultant Alberto Antonini began planting 50 hectares of organic vineyard on the eastern shore of Lake Musters — a cold, dry, wind-blasted site where growing grapes seemed improbable.

Soils here are a mosaic of alluvial rock, calcareous material from the nearby Sierra Silva, and clay deposits of ancient lagoon origin. Certified organic under Argencert from the start. Vegan. No shortcuts. The winemaker is Juan Pablo Murgia, named Tim Atkin MW's Young Winemaker of the Year in 2021.

The 2019 is the inaugural release of the 45 Rugientes Merlot — ten years after the first vines went in the ground. A single block of one hectare, 7,000 plants per hectare, harvested April 1st.

Fermented spontaneously in concrete tanks with a 17-day maceration, then aged 20 months in untoasted French oak foudres. Tim Atkin scored it 95 points and named it the Best Merlot in Argentina. Descorchados agreed with 93 points and the same distinction. This is what extreme climate and obsessive restraint can produce.

100% Merlot from Block 22, Sarmiento, Chubut, Patagonia.

Intense ruby red. The nose leads with fresh red fruit, quince jelly, and lifted spice — sweet paprika, black pepper, and a distinctive menthol note from the cold desert climate.

On the palate, bramble fruits, blackberry, and warm plum with lovely integrated tannins. Fresh, expressive, and elegantly balanced with persistent length. Not a soft, easy Merlot — a precise and site-driven one.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Refreshingly vibrant and juicy, showing bright bramble fruits, blackberries and warm plums, with lovely integrated tannins. This is a well-balanced and fruit-driven wine, which shows well through to the finish." ~95 Tim Atkin Master of Wine

This is the first release of merlot from Otrania. It comes from the first vineyards planted in the area, in 2010. And, like everything from that location 2,000 kilometers from Mendoza, it has a special character. What comes through here are herbal and menthol aromas, and the sensation of fresh herbs in the midst of red fruits. The acidity is intense, and the tannins are friendly and juicy in the midst of ripe fruit and spicy tones. ~ 93 Descorchados

Some fresh leafiness and capsicum character to the red plums and cherries. A crunchy, medium-bodied merlot with a nice, dry mouth-feel and texture. The herbal note here gives it a fresh layer. From organically grown grapes with Ecocert certification. Vegan. Drink now. ~ 91 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Otronia

Otronia is a pioneering winery located in the remote region of Sarmiento, Chubut, in Argentine Patagonia—widely considered one of the southernmost wine estates in the world.

Founded as an ambitious project by Alejandro Bulgheroni, it pushes the boundaries of viticulture by cultivating organic vineyards in extreme conditions marked by cold temperatures, fierce winds, and intense sunlight.

This unique environment produces wines with remarkable freshness, structure, and mineral precision, positioning Otronia as a benchmark for cool-climate, terroir-driven wines from one of the last frontiers of winemaking.
