About The Wine

Step into the heart of Provence, where the sun-drenched vineyards of La Bastide Saint Dominique yield a wine that embodies the essence of Southern Rhône elegance. Nestled in the foothills of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, this family estate has been crafting exceptional wines for over four decades. The story of Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique began in 1976. Four years later, in 1980, the estate celebrated a milestone moment as they proudly produced, bottled, and sold their inaugural wine.

Built around a former 16th century chapel, the estate was founded by Marie-Claude and Gérard Bonnet, La Bastide Saint Dominique began as a humble dream nurtured on just a few hectares of land. Now, under the stewardship of their son Eric, this legacy continues to flourish, spanning 123 acres and producing a range of esteemed wines.

Here, tradition meets innovation, as the estate embraces organic farming practices to preserve the richness of the soil and the integrity of the vines. The unique terroir, characterized by limestone soils and tempered by the Mistral wind, imparts a distinctive character to each bottle. The estate has been certified organic since 2011.

Eric Bonnet, the mastermind behind La Bastide Saint Dominique, began his winemaking journey in the renowned vineyards of Burgundy. Influenced by the region's delicate approach, he expertly balances power and detail in every bottle. This fusion of Burgundian finesse and Southern Rhône terroir creates wines of unparalleled elegance and complexity.

2021 vintage is particularly noteworthy — a year that rewarded careful growers in the Southern Rhône with wines of exceptional freshness, balance, and depth. At 93 points from James Suckling and 91 from Jeb Dunnuck, this is a textbook Chateauneuf that punches well above its price. Think of it as the Southern Rhône's answer to a serious Napa Cabernet: deeply concentrated, structured for the cellar, but generous enough to enjoy right now with the right food.

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.

80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre, 3% Cinsault — all estate fruit, fully destemmed, aged 18–24 months in tank before bottling. Intense ruby with purple tints.

The nose opens with jammy red fruits, kirsch liqueur, and blackberry, then reveals more complexity with aeration: laurel, cardamom, pepper, and a resinous pine forest character typical of southern Rhône garrigue.

The palate is opulent yet structured — full-bodied with elegant, well-integrated tannins, a creamy, soft texture, and vibrant freshness through the spiced finish. Soft, ripe kirsch and strawberry carry through to a long, warming close.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A well-framed and elegant red with notes of cherries, wild berries, baking spices and dried herbs and flowers. Medium body with fine tannins. Fresh and pure with a transparent character. Very elegant with a succulent core of fresh fruit and a crunchy finish. 80% grenache, 10% syrah, 7% mourvedre and 3% cinsault. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling

~ 93 Wine & Spirits Magazine

Shows lovely freshness, with red currant woven with smoke, earth, wood spices and peppercorn on a medium-bodied frame. Reveals orange peel acidity that drives the silky finish, which has snappiness smoothed out by singed alder and smoke. Drink now through 2035. 2,500 cases made, 100 cases imported. ~ 92 Wine Spectator

Strong ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Ripe plum fruit in the underlay, with some orange zest and some beeswax. Juicy, sweet cherry fruit, plums, some nougat, ripe tannins, mineral finish, an elegant food wine with a honey touch in the finish. ~ 91 Falstaff

The base 2021 Chateauneuf Du Pape is mostly Grenache that was brought up in stainless steel and concrete tanks. Kirsch, lavender, peppery garrigue, and spring flower notes jump from the glass of this medium ruby-hued, medium-bodied, charming, layered 2021. It has sweet tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. ~ 91 Jeb Dunnuck

A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre and 3% Cinsaut, the 2021 Chateauneuf-du-Pape spent six months in stainless steel tanks and nine more in concrete. Showcasing freshness and elegance, it delights with ripe red fruit aromas, smooth tannins and a bright finish. ~ 90 Vinous Media
