About The Wine

Roederer Estate is the California outpost of Champagne Louis Roederer — a pedigree that carries centuries of winemaking know-how into Anderson Valley's fog-shrouded vineyards. Founded in 1982, the estate is one of the few California sparkling houses that sources only estate-grown fruit, a control-freak discipline that shows in the glass.

Apple Alley Vineyard sits above the winery, reached by a dirt road lined with century-old apple trees — the last remnants of the orchard that once covered the land. This single-vineyard release is Chardonnay-driven (80.3%), spent 36 months on the yeast, and was disgorged in March 2025. Twenty-two percent was fermented in cask, adding a pastry-crust richness that sets it apart from the house's other releases.

The 2021 growing season was a study in scarcity: drought conditions, a spring frost, absent fog, and one of the lowest yields on record. Small berries delivered concentrated flavor and high acidity — a vintage built for precision. The wine opens with minerals, fresh pear, and wildflower, then unfolds into green apple, brioche, and a hint of cherry and cinnamon. Chalky, creamy, and taut, with vibrant mineral-driven acidity and a long finish of wild honey, lime zest, and salt.

94 points from James Suckling, 95 from Antonio Galloni, 94 from Jeb Dunnuck. $50 for a wine that drinks like it came from a producer who's been perfecting the method for two centuries — because it did.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Apple Alley Vineyard is a dense, effusive wine. Peach, apricot, white flowers, acacia, tangerine oil and floral notes soar from the glass. About 25% of the lots were done in oak, which comes through in the wine's textural presence and overall feel. It's a vivid, exceptionally beautiful wine. ~95 Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Chalky, creamy and fresh, with minerals, fresh pears and wildflowers on the nose. Wonderful richness on the palate, with vibrant, mineral-driven acidity. Dense bubbles and a long finish of delicate herbs, wild honey, lime zest and salt. A mouthwatering, nuanced, medium-body wine. Disgorged March 2025. 5 g/L dosage. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Chardonnay-driven, the 2021 Apple Alley Vineyard is released later in the year than the Clark Road Vineyard, given more time on the yeast, with a March 2025 disgorgement. It has a crisp structure and purity, with more oak presence than the 2020, and 5 grams per liter dosage. It has a bold sense of place, sourced from a vineyard above the winery, fleshy, creamy, and medium-bodied, with a toasty concentration that persists through a long finish. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

Classically styled and highly polished, this medium-bodied blend of 80.3% Chardonnay and 19.7% Pinot Noir is the complete package. From aromas of freshly baked bread and bright notes of green and yellow orchard fruit to a whiff of forest air and captivating hints of white fig and pine nut, it's a serious wine that nonetheless affords pure pleasure. ~94 Tasting Panel Magazine

Vibrant and refined, with multilayered apple and pear flavors accented by brioche, cherry and spiced cinnamon tones that linger on the rich finish. ~93 Wine Spectator
