About The Wine

Most wine buyers know Zinfandel. Far fewer know that Zinfandel and Primitivo are genetically the same grape — same DNA, different origin story. Primitivo is the Italian name for what arrived in California as Zinfandel, and grown in the right Paso Robles terroir, it makes something Zinfandel rarely does: density without jam, richness without weight, and the kind of blue-fruit freshness that makes you wonder why California doesn't grow more of it. There are 312 cases. That is the entire production.

The fruit comes from Parvaneh Vineyard in the Creston District AVA — the same estate that supplies Petite Sirah for The Stand, one of Tooth & Nail's flagship blends. Creston's well-drained soils and warm afternoons combine with reliable marine cooling off the Templeton Gap to produce grapes with vivid flavor and natural acidity. Winemaker Jeremy Leffert handles the fruit with restraint: hand-harvested, then cold-soaked for 48 hours, fermented in stainless steel for eight days. Toward the end of fermentation, the must is gently pressed — deliberately, to avoid excessive tannin extraction from the skins — before returning to tank to finish. The wine then moves to barrel, where it spends eight months aging sur lie in 15% new French oak without racking, preserving the freshness and vitality Jeremy built into the fermentation. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result is a Primitivo that earns the word "massive" from the producer without being heavy. Raspberry, wildberry, sage, tarragon, and cracked pepper on the nose — herbal and aromatic in a way California Zinfandel almost never is. The palate is all blue fruits, blackberry jam, vanilla cream, and spice, with a mineral lift at the finish that keeps the whole thing from going too dark. Open it with prime rib or anything off a wood fire. Drink it now or put it down three years. Either way it will hold.

Primitivo (100%), Parvaneh Vineyard, Creston District AVA, Paso Robles. 48-hour cold soak, 8 days stainless steel fermentation with gentle press toward end of fermentation, 8 months sur lie in 15% new French oak barriques, no racking, bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Aromas of raspberry, wildberry, sage, tarragon, sandalwood, and cracked pepper. The palate is fresh, rounded, and massive — blue fruits, blackberry jam, vanilla cream, orange rind, and spice, with densely layered fruit and mineral lift on a smooth, silky finish.
