Cote-Rotie — the "roasted slope" — is northern Rhone's most storied appellation, where terraced Syrah clings to vertiginous schist and granite hillsides above the river. Saint Cosme has been making wine on this site since 1490, with Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the chateau proving vines thrived here two millennia ago. Louis Barruol, in charge since 1992, sources fruit from the Cote Brune's most prized lieux-dits — Neve, Le Plomb, and La Vialliere — steep, terraced parcels where old-vine Syrah pulls mineral depth from schist soils.

The 2023 vintage delivered a hot, dry growing season with loads of sunshine, tempered by spring rains and cool nights. The result: rich, juicy, supple wines with unexpected freshness and salinity cutting through the ripe, silky fruit. Barruol whole-cluster ferments 100% of the fruit — stems attached — then ages the wine in half new French oak, half used. The stems and oak frame the structure; the terroir delivers the tension.

In the glass: refined, fine-textured, precise. Aromas of cherries, wild berries, wild herbs, bark and baking spices. Medium-bodied, meaty, fresh, bright, peppery and lush, with a core of dark sweet cherries, raspberries, licorice, smoke and flowers. Decant it 1–2 hours if you're opening it young. Better still, cellar it 7–9 years and watch it hit its stride between 8 and 18 years of age.
