Here’s one of the things we love about Montepulciano d'Abruzzo—it’s simply a pleasure to drink and it won’t break the bank. James James Suckling concurs, describing Montepulciano as “solid, rich, easy-to-like, and best of all wallet-friendly wines.”

There are few more pleasurable and wallet-friendly Italian reds than the 2018 Sangro Terra Regia Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva. Named for the Sangro River that rises in the middle of Abruzzo National Park near Pescasseroli in the Apennine Mountains, the vineyards of Cantina Sangria draw all the benefits from its location. The deep and rich soils made up of silt and limestone pebbles are the perfect terroir for the grapes to thrive, delivering wines with rich flavors and aromas.

Founded in 1971, the cooperative Cantina Sangro began with 110 members—most of them small family farms with modest vineyards and olive groves—with one common desire: to transform the precious grapes of local winemakers into something big. They succeeded, and today Sangro’s wine embodies the great passion and expertise handed down for generations.

This is a wine for rich and hearty dishes—lamb, beef roasts, braised veal, your very best burger, or aged cheese. It was born in a good year for Abruzzo. Vinous Media gave this vintage a 90-point review, and said that "The best 2018 whites and reds are a pleasure to taste, showcasing a cooler vintage character, and should continue to improve with time in bottle."

The 2018s have now had the time in bottle that Vinous suggested, and this Riserva is ready for your enjoyment. It has complex and elegant aromas and red fruits, vanilla, and spicy notes on the palate.

The complexity comes from the grapes grown in favorable terroir and from the skilled hands of Gianni Pasquale, a respected Italian winemaker who leads some of the major cooperatives in Abruzzo.

BHW has the Lowest Price Anywhere on this 100% Montepulciano from the heart of Abruzzo. We’re excited to offer this pleasing Italian red for over 40% off—it’s under $25 and it’s a wine—and a winery—waiting for you to discover it.
