Do your vacations revolve around wine? Mine usually do.
I have traveled to Europe and back at least five times already this year tracking down rockin’ wines for you all, and I have had a blast doing it. Case in point, I stumbled across this Château while driving around Saint-Émilion in search of my favorite cannelé! Across the road and down the vineyard from Château Valandraud (yes, that Valandraud) lies Château Mangot, a wine Jeb Dunnuck donned with 95+ points and calling it, “the finest the finest I've tasted from this address”! And get this, it clocks in well below $200, and below $60!
Château Mangot has roots that reach back to 1556 and is now cared for by the third generation of the Todeschini family. They’ve taken this historical property and its 84 acres of vines to the next level, farming them organically and producing expressive wines with minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar.
2018 was an outstanding year for Saint-Emilion. Vinous Media blessed it with 96 points, stating that "The 2018 Right Bank wines are opulent, flamboyant reds. It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic.” Cuvée Todeschini 'Distique’ is a poster child for this vintage.
This blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon is the finest Jeb Dunnuck has ever tasted from the Château, saying it has “purity of fruit and full-bodied richness,” rating it 95 points. VertdeVin echoes that score and praises it, saying its “nose is elegant, and beautifully built, and offers power” and “intensity.”
This powerful wine has the potential to age for two or three more decades, a quality not often found in a Bordeaux at this price. Seriously, this wine—Château Mangot’s signature, most special label, is under $55! If you’re not setting foot in Bordeaux anytime soon, one sip of this wine will fly you there virtually, and you’ll feel like you’ve been bumped up to first class from the last row in coach.
