About The Wine

If you follow Napa Cabernet, you know Philippe Melka. Named one of the top ten wine consultants in the world, the French-born winemaker trained at Château Pétrus and Haut-Brion before building a pedigree at Dominus, Silver Oak, Hundred Acre, Dalla Valle, and Bryant Family. A champion of soil-driven wines, Melka is selective about the sites he works with, drawn only to distinct terroirs with the potential for truly transformative wines.

For the Grieve Family’s Double Eagle, Melka works hand-in-hand with Maayan Koschitzky, a renowned talent who has served as Director of Winemaking for Atelier Melka since 2017. With a background at Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, and as a partner in La Pelle Wines, Maayan was named one of Wine Enthusiast’s "40 Under 40 Tastemakers." Together, they bring an expertise to Double Eagle that is rarely matched in the valley.

Because of this world-class pedigree, Double Eagle is notoriously hard to find at these prices outside of their exclusive mailing list. This is a rare opportunity to bypass the waitlist and secure a cult-level Napa Cabernet right here.

The fruit comes from two premium valley-floor sites: Mill Creek Vineyard in St. Helena and Skellenger Vineyard in Oakville, two of Napa's most coveted growing areas. Each block is vinified separately to preserve individual character before being brought together into a final blend.

Fermented in stainless steel and aged 18 months in 75% new French oak, the result is a structured, concentrated 100% Cabernet Sauvignon built for the cellar but approachable now.

2019 was a fabulous year for Napa Valley. Wine Spectator awarded this year a 97-point score, and Vinous Media gave it 96 points, saying that "The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets have turned out beautifully. 2019 is a very high-quality vintage of Cabernets that will be easy to drink and enjoy with minimal cellaring. The extra kick of late heat softened the tannins, making the wines a pleasure to taste and drink."

If you're looking for a Napa Cab at this pedigree level without the three-figure Screaming Eagle price tag, this is exactly where to look.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep ruby/purple, mostly opaque. The nose is rich and expressive — pure cassis, dark blue-tinged fruits, sweet tobacco, graphite, espresso, and toasty oak.

On the palate: full-bodied and concentrated with excellent mid-palate depth, fine-grained velvety tannins, and a long, focused finish. Notes of dark chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, and hints of mint carry through to a persistent close. Drinking well now through 2039.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The flagship from the estate, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Double Eagle is all varietal that spent 18 months in 75% new French oak. This ruby/purple-hued beauty offers up a terrific nose of pure cassis and darker, blue-tinged fruits as well as sweet tobacco, graphite, espresso, and toasty oak. Pure, full-bodied, and concentrated, it stays straight and focused on the palate, has plenty of mid-palate depth and richness, velvety tannins, and a great finish. It's a step up over the 2018 and a gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon to enjoy over the coming 15+ years. ~ 96 Jeb Dunnuck

~96 The Wine Independent

Spicy, funky aromas of earth and tobacco draw you into this concentrated, complex and saturated wine before deep blueberry, dark chocolate and blackberry flavors unfold and fill the mouth. Aged in 75% new French barrels, the intriguing oak nuances merge nicely with the indulgent fruit components. Best through 2030 ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

Made entirely from purchased fruit (St. Helena and Oakville) and aged 18 months in 75% new French oak, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Double Eagle is rich and chocolaty, with ripe black-cherry fruit. Full-bodied and supple in the mouth, this 100% Cabernet finishes long and mouthwatering, balanced by softly dusty tannins. ~ 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Grieve Family Winery

Grieve Family Winery is a boutique, family-owned estate in Napa Valley’s cool-climate Lovall Valley, founded by David and Kathleen Grieve after relocating from San Francisco in the early 2000s.

Known for its focus on Sauvignon Blanc—one of the largest plantings in the area—the winery produces small-lot, Bordeaux-inspired wines that reflect the region’s fog-cooled mornings, mineral-rich soils, and coastal influence. With limited production and a strong emphasis on site expression, Grieve has built a reputation for elegant, terroir-driven wines crafted from its organically farmed estate vineyards.
