About The Wine

Maybach Family Vineyards is one of Napa's most coveted allocationshand-crafted by Thomas Rivers Brown, arguably the valley's most celebrated winemaker, whose minimalist approach lets exceptional terroir do the talking.

The name Maybach itself carries a century of engineering legend, from Wilhelm Maybach's invention of the high-speed internal combustion engine to Karl's ultra-luxury automobiles. That legacy of precision and craft defines every bottle.

The Vocabulum is Maybach's most site-expressive release — sourced exclusively from the Ecotone Vineyard, formerly known as Thorevilos, a hillside parcel planted in 1990 at 800 feet above the Silverado Trail near St. Helena. The volcanic rock, pebble, and red clay soils here produce wines that are intensely structured yet deeply refined. This is only the third release of Vocabulum, with a mere 105 cases made — making it one of the rarest single-vineyard Cabernets in Napa Valley.

2023 Napa Valley vintage isn’t just another great year – it’s the year that will be etched in history. Wine experts are calling it "the vintage of a lifetime," and for good reason. The perfect blend of cool temperatures, morning fog, and balanced sunlight created conditions so exceptional, they’re being compared to Bordeaux's iconic 1961 vintage. As The Wine Independent put it, 2023 is "a winemaker's dream in terms of wine style." Wine Bible author Karen MacNeil calls it "one of the most phenomenal vintages ever in Napa Valley." This is Napa at its finest, with wines of depth, power, and elegance that will be the talk of the wine world for decades to come.

Think of it alongside other cult single-vineyard Napa Cabs: the power of Harlan, the site-specificity of Scarecrow, the precision of Abreu. If you know those wines, you understand what Vocabulum is reaching for — and at this price and production level, it is one of the most compelling buys in ultra-premium Napa Cabernet.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

2023 offers a darker edge in its black cherry and red plum-driven aromatics, layered with chocolaty oak and rich mid-palate concentration.

Medium to full-bodied with a supple, nicely concentrated mouthfeel and a good finish. True to the 2023 vintage character — juicy, fruit-forward, and generous — it is accessible upon release yet structured for the cellar.

Medium ruby in color with more depth and weight on the palate than the hue suggests, revealing greater layers and structure as it opens in the glass.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

More red and blue fruits, graphite, spring flowers, orange blossom, and violet notes shine in the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Vocabulum. It's full-bodied, with a pure, layered, ultra-fine mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. The purity, elegance, and seamlessness here are truly something special. I love it today, yet it will cruise for 20-25 years. There are 105 cases produced. Drink 2025-2050.
