Rarely do we start off by talking about the outside of a bottle, rather than the beautiful juice inside the bottle, but there’s something about this Primitivo’s label that’s so appealing. The warm burnt orange tones juxtaposed against Alice in Wonderland-ish figures really draw you in. There’s not an avid wine drinker, if they're being honest, who hasn’t been enticed by a fascinating label only to be disappointed by the wine inside the bottle. We guarantee that will not be the case today.

The 97 point 2021 Tenute Piccini Prima Festa Primitivo Di Manduria DOCis a fantastic wine that will not disappoint. Coming from a winery that Wine Enthusiast says is "one of the most dynamic and innovative wineries in Italy today,” it’s one of the best Primitivos we’ve ever offered.

In 1882, Angiolo Piccini started with a small estate of a little more than 17 acres of vineyards. He passed down his philosophy to future generations: It doesn’t matter how much you do, but how much passion you put in what you do. Passion is the backbone of Tenute Piccini. As the family acquired more vineyards over the decades, they’ve grown to own five family estates. Today, with over 140 years of winemaking experience,Piccini’s passion for quality and authenticity has given the winery a name that is one of the best-known in Italy.

If you’re new to Primitivo, you should know the grape has quite the history. You can find references to it in the writings of the Roman Empire. Legend has it that it was the grape served at the Last Supper. We don’t know if that part of its history is accurate, but we do know that the grape spread south of Rome to Manduria where the most esteemed Primitivo DOCs now reside. Here it thrives year-round in the sunny, warm climate as breezes from the Ionian Sea keep it cool.

Italian wine expert Luca Maroni rates this amazing Primitivo 97 points. It’s the perfect wine for game, stews, and meat sauces. Serve it in a large, open glass, just a smidge below room temperature to experience all it has to offer including the front notes of bright cherry and clove that excite the palate with a nice dollop of oak and vanilla.
