Why Alsace Wines?
A rain shadow, a fractured rift valley of a dozen different soils, and four noble grapes - Alsace is France's great white-wine secret.
Dry, Not Sweet
The tall green bottle fools people. Alsace Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner are bone dry - taut, stony and structured, closer to fine white Burgundy than to any German model.
The Grape Is On the Label
Alsace is the one French region that names the variety rather than only the village - which makes it the easiest place in France to buy with confidence.
The Best Food Whites in France
Gewurztraminer with spice and washed-rind cheese, Pinot Gris with anything roasted, Riesling with everything else. Cremant d'Alsace handles the celebrations.
A Wine Journey Through Alsace
Four noble grapes, 51 grand crus, and a 170-kilometre wine route past half-timbered villages with vineyards at the edge of the square.
Riesling & Muscat
Riesling is the aristocrat: dry, citrus-and-stone, built to age for decades. Muscat is the trick wine - it smells intensely of fresh grapes and flowers, then finishes completely dry.
Gewurztraminer & Pinot Gris
Gewurztraminer is unmistakable - lychee, rose petal and ginger. Alsace Pinot Gris is nothing like Pinot Grigio: rich, smoky and honeyed, superb with roast pork or foie gras.
Grand Cru & Cremant
Fifty-one Grand Cru vineyards map the region's best slopes, while Cremant d'Alsace - made by the same method as Champagne - is a quarter of production and one of France's best sparkling values.
Alsace Wine, Answered
Is Alsace wine sweet or dry?
Most Alsace is dry, especially Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are sometimes off-dry without saying so, which is why many producers now print a dryness scale on the back label. Vendanges Tardives and Selection de Grains Nobles are the explicitly sweet styles.
Why does Alsace put grape names on the label?
Alsace is the one French region that labels primarily by variety rather than place, a legacy of its German periods. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat are the four noble grapes - which makes Alsace the easiest French region for newcomers to navigate.
How is Alsace Riesling different from German Riesling?
Alsace Riesling is normally fully dry, with more body, higher alcohol and a broader, stonier texture. Classic German Riesling, especially from the Mosel, is often lighter, lower in alcohol and balanced by a touch of sweetness.
What food goes with Alsace wine?
This is arguably the most food-flexible white wine region in the world. Gewurztraminer handles Asian spice and washed-rind cheeses like Munster; Pinot Gris suits roast pork, poultry and foie gras; dry Riesling works with seafood, charcuterie and almost anything else on the table.
