Do you know what one of the fantastic things about Chateauneuf du Pape is? You can bring a recent vintage into your home and open it today, and it will be amazing. But wines from the region CAN age for a decade or more, and both of those things hold true for today’s wine.

The 2021 Bernard Magrez Chateauneuf du Pape is a young vintage, for sure, but James Suckling has two things to say about it. The first is that it is a “textbook Chateauneuf-du-Pape.” The second is that you can “drink now or hold.”

Because this wine is from Bernard Magrez, we know Suckling is spot on. Magrez is a legend in the wine industry who owns 43 vineyards around the world with a large concentration of them in France. You’ll find his vineyards in the south in Languedoc, Roussillon, and Provence. Further up north, he owns four esteemed grand cru classé Châteaux in Bordeaux including Château Pape Clément an exceptional Grand Cru Classé from Pessac-Léognan. And, of course, he has vineyards in the Rhone where Chateauneuf du Pape is located.

Magrez knows French wine, and he’s celebrated for his attention to detail in the vineyard and constant achievement of excellence in the winery which translates into award-winning and quality wines for every occasion. He produces several wines from Chateauneuf du Pape, including this one that he’s so proud of he named it after himself.

This blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah (a classic Rhone GSM blend) has a fresh nose, black fruits, and an excellent balance of acidity, fruit, and freshness.

This is one of the best value CdP’s we offer here on BHW. Bottles from other wineries in the region with similar ratings (Suckling gives it 92 points) go for $20, or more than this textbook Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Our price is 30% off, and with this price, you can buy one to open now and one to open a couple of years from now, rather than, as Suckling suggests, “drink now or hold.” Or, buy 6, and shipping is free!
