Understanding Barolo and Nebbiolo

The complex, yet exciting wine history of Barolo dates back to the 19th century, in Piedmont, Italy. This region, on the border of Switzerland and France, is home to the village (and now wine) Barolo. What was once a simple drink is today, a globally renowned masterpiece, known and loved by wine enthusiasts across the globe.

Barolo 1

Why Barolo is Known As The King of Wines

The title of “King of Wines” is not handed out lightly - so it must say something about the quality and prestige of the Barolo wines. To produce these red wines, native Italian Nebbiolo grapes are used, specifically from the misty hills of Piedmont. Here, the grapes’ thin skins, high acidity, high tannin and alluring floral notes are what make Barolo so unique and admired.

But to further instill quality in the wines, certain regulations outlined by the Barolo DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), ensure only the best wines are produced. These regulations dictate every aspect of Barolo production, from grape composition to aging requirements. To earn the prestigious DOCG designation, red wines must be crafted solely from Nebbiolo grapes, ensuring purity and authenticity. Above all, traditional winemaking techniques are at the heart of the Barolo wines, where red wines are macerated for extended periods, adding to the depth, color, tannin and flavor of the wine.

Another key component, the wine’s aging, takes place in large casks for several years, which means the red wines can mature and further develop aromas and complexity. It is this extended time, viniculture, care and precision that has ultimately led to Barolo being hailed as the King of Wines.

What to Know About Barolo vs. Barbaresco

Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape, are easy to confuse. However, these red wines have rather unique personalities, shaped by terroir and winemaking techniques.

In terms of characteristics, Barolo tends to be robust and tannic, reflecting the region's cooler climate and longer aging requirements.

Barbaresco, on the other hand, grows in limestone-rich soil and warmer climates, making the red wines more approachable, elegant and best for drinking younger.

While the two red wines share similar flavors, the environment and winemaking practices are where the main differences lie. This also means the ideal food pairings will differ. Where Barolo thrives next to a hearty, meaty dish, Barbaresco does better with lighter meals.
