El Valle del Loira es una región de cultivo de larga historia que traza el río Loire y fluye desde el este de Orleans hacia Angers vertiéndose en el Océano Atlántico. El valle ha sido ocupado durante miles de años incluso las ruinas del Imperio Romano siguen siendo visibles hoy en día. La cultura del Loira establece la línea entre la agricultura y la alta sociedad. ¿Quién habría pensado que hay una línea que une ambos mundos? Es el hogar de algunos de los vinos más distinguidos del mundo. Como un rasgo único, el valle que corre de este a oeste, es capaz de ofrecer una amplia gama de microclimas. La región se divide esencialmente en 4 subregiones diferentes.Loire Valley

La subregión final se conoce como los Viñedos Centrales. Es aquí donde encontrarás algunas de las mayores expresiones de Sauvignon Blanc en el mundo. En los viñedos de Pouilly-Fume y Sancerre, Sauvignon Blanc está hecho con un estilo refrescante brillante que te hará volver por más, una y otra vez. Además de estos vinos blancos de primera clase, Sancerre también permite el cultivo de la Pinot Noir que ofrece vinos tintos y rosados. Por lo general, con un estilo más maduro, con más fruta que se asemeja más en su estilo a los Pinot Noirs de Oregón que a los de Borgoña.

A medida que te mueves hacia el oeste y las temperaturas comienzan a subir, puedes ver una explosión de diversidad. Conforme se acerca a las dos zonas de cultivo más grandes de Anjous y Touraine, el foco principal se centra en Cabernet Franc y Chenin Blanc. Dicho esto, también encontrará plantaciones de Gamay y Malbec (en el Loira se llama Côt). La diversidad no sólo se deriva del aumento de variedades, también encontrará vinos hechos en casi todos los estilos. Con la Cabernet Franc y la Gamay encontrarás vinos tintos y vinos rosados. Con la Chenin Blanc encontrarás vinos secos, dulces o espumosos, estos tres estilos los puedes identificar dentro de una sola denominación como Vouvray.  Estas dos subregiones albergan una serie de denominaciones importantes:

Touraine

Touraine es una clase de salvaje oeste del vino en el Loira. Se pueden encontrar vinos elaborados a partir de casi cualquier uva permitida en todo el Valle del Loira. Esto da a los productores mucho espacio para jugar con diferentes variedades y estilos de vino.

Vouvray

Posiblemente la región más famosa del mundo para la producción de Chenin Blanc. Producen casi todos los estilos de vino de Chenin. Desde vinos secos hasta dulces e incluso espumosos se les permite utilizar la denominación Vouvray en sus etiquetas. Los mejores ejemplos de vinos dulces son conocidos por ser capaces de envejecer durante toda la vida.

Bourgueil

La región más occidental de la región de Touraine. Esta denominación está enteramente dedicada a Cabernet Franc. Situados en la orilla norte del Loira, estos vinos presentan una hermosa intensidad con un gran potencial de guarda.

Chinon

Chinon está justo al otro lado del río desde Bourgueil y también se centra en gran medida en Cabernet Franc. Hay una pequeña cantidad de Chinon blanc que se produce a partir de Chenin Blanc con un estilo seco en sus vinos.

Anjou

Una región en crecimiento muy grande que alberga principalmente Chenin Blanc y Cabernet Franc. Los vinos que se producen aquí están ganando rápidamente la atención internacional. Con un gran enfoque en el cultivo de uva orgánica y un cambio general hacia la sustentabilidad está resultando exitoso para los productores de Anjou. Estos vinos son casi siempre secos, incluso los pocos Chenin que tienen un poco de azúcar residual en ellos tienden a ser muy amigables con la comida.

Savennieres

Famosa por sus expresiones secas y no tan secas de Chenin blanc, esta región es el hogar de una serie de monopolios muy importantes, anteriormente en propiedad y manutención por monjes cistercienses.

Coteaux-du-Layon

Se encuentra justo al otro lado del río Loire desde Savennieres. El clima aquí es significativamente más húmedo, lo que permite que el Botrytis crezca más desenfrenadamente. Son famosos por sus vinos de postre.

Finalmente está la zona costera atlántica que rodea Nantes. Es aquí donde la Melon de Bourgogne encuentra su hogar en la denominación Muscadet. El melón lo hace extremadamente bien en el clima frío nublado que es el predomiante en la costa atlántica. Puedes encontrar vinos extremadamente ligeros y minerales destinados al consumo inmediato o puedes encontrar vinos que en las bodegas ya han envejecido durante casi una década que muestran un estilo más rico y completo de la melon. La única cosa que estos dos estilos tienen en común, es su maridaje perfecto para mariscos. No hay mucha representación de otras variedades en esta región, ciertamente nada que haya llegado a la expresión que tiene la Melon.

VineyardsDe las regiones vinícolas más reconocidas de Francia, es difícil encontrar otra que se acerque a ofrecer la diversidad en los estilos de vino que hace en el valle del  Loira. Esto tiene que ver con la orientación este-oeste del valle, la larga historia de la agricultura en la región; pero la única cosa con la que podemos contar es que no importa lo que estés buscando en tu aventura personal en el vino, el Valle del Loira tiene algo para ti.
