From the Catalan region of Priorat, the 92 point 2018 Bernard Magrez Herencia del Padri Priorat continues our streak of bringing you excellent wine from the wine rock star.Magrez is celebrated for his attention to detail in the vineyard and constant achievement of excellence in the winery which translates into award-winning wines for every occasion.
He’s a legend in the wine industry who owns 43 vineyards around the world with a large concentration of them in France. You’ll find his vineyards in the south in Languedoc, Roussillon, and Provence. Further up north, he owns four esteemed grand cru classé Châteaux in Bordeaux. His other vineyards are scattered globally, including the Catalonian estate this wine hails from, located 120 km south of Barcelona in Porrera.
In the Herencia del Padri vineyard in the village, vines cling to the sharp slopes and peaks of the local hills at an altitude of 300m above sea level. The black slate and quartz in the hills give minerality and freshness to the wines.
A blend of Carignan, Grenache Noir, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine has a hefty dose of tight-grained tannins from oak aging, giving it a rustic charm. There’s plenty of cocoa on the nose and the palate, plus strawberry and cherry fruits, leather, and herbal notes. James Suckling praises it, saying it’s “structured, rich, and savory with a dusty, flavorful finish.”
