Single Vineyard Sangiovese: 2018 Bibbiani Pulignano Rosso Toscano

In 1968, a planting of Sangiovese grapes went into the Pulignano vineyard, one of Villa Bibbiani’s vineyards in Tuscany. Fifty years later, during the94-point vintageof 2018, Bibbiani harvested the Sangiovese from those vines to make asingle grape, single vineyard Rosso Toscano that will shine on your dinner table.

The 2018 Bibbiani Pulignano Rosso Toscano is anelegant Sangiovesefrom this estate withmore than 1300 years of history. It’s a little gem in the heart of Tuscany that’s “much more than a winery, much more than an estate,” according to Gambero Rosso, we agree.

Its history is intriguing, reaching back to the Middle Ages. Originally a Benedictine monastery, the Frescobaldi family came into possession of the property in 1700. They planted vineyards and a botanical garden withthe help of Cosimo Ridolfi, the father of modern Italian agriculture. When Ridolfi created the villa’s botanical gardens, he planted more than 3,000 species of plants and trees. That commitment to biodiversity still exists in the vineyards and the gardens.

Today, the beautiful vineyards—planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more—extend from the slopes of Montalbano to the church of San Jacopo in Pulignano. Bibbiani’s passionate winemaker Leopoldo Morara. His skills have been honed working at respected estates in France, Chile, New Zealand, and, of course, Italy, says “the key to making a good wine is maximum respect for the terroir, and we work solely along these lines.

Thegrapes are picked strictly by hand. Villa Bibbiani uses a gravity system to avoid stressing the berries and uses a slow and gentle pressing system to get the absolute best from the Sangiovese grapes that thrivel in the sandstone and rocky, schistous clay soils of the vineyard. The result is a wine that’sdelicate and complex, a 100% persuasive and fine Sangiovese that will evolve over time, one that Luca Maroni rates91 points.

Villa Bibbiani is the perfect combination of Tuscan winemaking tradition and modern techniques. By taking advantage of both, Bibbiani crafts exceptional, unexpected, unique wines.
