An Attractive Red: 2020 Vieux Chantecaille Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Bordeaux. Saint Emilion. Grand Cru. All these words conjure images of inhaling an enticing red wine in a special wine glass that gets your mouth watering before you even take a sip. Get ready to turn that image into reality.

The first time you bring a glass of 2020 Vieux Chantecaille Saint Emilion Grand Cru to your nose to take that important sniff before your first sip, you’ll know you’re about to drink something special. It’s no surprise because Vieux Chantecaille is located in Saint Emilion Grand Cru, less than 100m away from the recognized Château Le Bon Pasteur, and just over 1 mile from world-renowned Château Cheval Blanc. This wine comes from ideal terroir.

This Right Bank beauty is what James Suckling calls “an attractive red,”and we agree. It’s just a lovely Saint-Emilion, made from a classic blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc by a famous Bordeaux family.

Vieux Chantecaille is owned by the Moze-Berthon family who also owns Château Maillet in Pomerol. The family’s winemaking history goes back to 1829, and today the family estate is led by the 7th and 8th generations Patrick Moze-Berthon and his son.

In 2009, they brought on Hubert de Boüard of Château Angelus as a winemaking consultant. The winemaker, who grew up among the vines of Angelus, is a sought-after consultant who works with wineries in Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, and Medoc, as well as in Spain, Thailand, and Lebanon.

The wine de Boüard crafts for Vieux Chantecaille is full of red and black berries and cocoa with a bit of nuttiness. Its 12 months in new French oak give subtle touches of chocolate and vanilla that complement its fruit, and its wonderful tannic structure completes this elegant wine that Suckling gives his approval to with 92 points.
