"Palmer is a well-known Chateau, One of the greatest in Bordeaux. Once it touches your lips, Your lips will write quips, And you’ll want to go to Margaux!"

Château Palmer
whose pedigree architecture is a hallmark of its superb produce is an undisputed star of the prestigious Margaux Appellation. The unusual combination of grape varieties – as much Merlot as Cabernet Sauvignon and a significant amount of Petit Verdot – gives Château Palmer a bouquet of extraordinary complexity. Since 1998, Château Palmer has also produced Alter Ego, which is faithful to the Palmer style but will reach maturity earlier.

Located in the Margaux appellation of the Medoc, Bordeaux area, Château Palmer is a classified growth of the 1855 classification. Its vineyard lies upon the famous gravel rises of the greatest of Medoc wines, this first terrace of gravels formed by and along the Gironde estuary. On this exceptional terroir, Château Palmer has constantly produced wines of unique character, clearly identified and recognized by the fine wines lovers all over the world.

With a vineyard of 55 ha, the production of Palmer is limited in volume. A maximum of 10.000 cases of Château Palmer, and 8.000 cases of Alter Ego, the other wine of Château Palmer, are produced in every vintage. Over several years, under the guidance of Thomas Duroux, the proportion of the vineyard managed using biodynamics has increased, so that by the 2013 vintage the majority of the vineyard was biodynamic and by 2014 it was 100% biodynamic.

2013 was the last vintage at Chateau Palmer that was not farmed using only biodynamic farming techniques in their vineyards. The move to Biodynamic farming was done at a fairly fast pace for Bordeaux, as they began experimenting with it starting slowly in 2008, with only 1 hectare of vines.

They stepped up the program in 2011, and shifted to 100% biodynamic farming in 2014. They were certified as being 100% biodynamic in 2017.

At Chateau Palmer, they began experimenting in 2013 trying to reduce the amount of sulphites used. To accomplish this, they added yeast to grapes on the sorting table. Part of the organic farming techniques utilize herbal teas in the vineyard to combat mildew, fungus or other diseases.

At Chateau Palmer, they are more than just biodynamic, they also embrace modern technology. They were one of the first estates to utilize optical sorting, starting with the 2009 vintage. Before picking, they use infrared cameras to film each parcel, to help determine the precise moment to harvest. This matters because the moment of picking is key in trying to reach phenolic ripeness.

Most Common Varietal Blend of Chateau Palmer

  • 47% Merlot
  • 47% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 6% Petit Verdot

Food Pairings and Servings

Chateau Palmer is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. This wine would work wonderfully with lamb and beef dishes.

Tasting Notes

Chateau Palmer's wines combine power and complexity with delicacy, extreme elegance and a magnificent velvet texture. Approachable when young, the wines age remarkably well, developing even more complexity and aromatic richness, remaining still delicate and silky.
